About Ricky

Applied mathematics, made useful.

I’m a Los Angeles-based data scientist with a foundation in statistics, optimization, and machine learning—and a habit of asking what the evidence actually supports.

Rui “Ricky” Sun is a Los Angeles-based data scientist and a graduate of UC Irvine’s Applied and Computational Mathematics program. His work combines statistical reasoning, machine learning, and decision-focused evaluation.

At UC Irvine, he built end-to-end PyTorch and simulation workflows for metasurface inverse design, including data generation, conditional VAE training, controlled model comparison, and RCWA-based physics evaluation. His product work spans ProofRound for evidence-grounded interview preparation, Nepholio for ADPKD nutrition tracking, and contributions to Realy, a multi-table analysis system from the UCLA Trustworthy AI Lab.

Ricky is pursuing early-career data science roles where rigorous experimentation, reproducible analysis, and clear technical communication are central to the work.
